WHS - Understanding - Caps

Modified on Tue, 15 Oct at 11:47 AM

Thank you for contacting Golf Link regarding the Cap under the World Handicapping System (WHS).

It is a little complicated to begin with but be assured the software has been rarely faulted when checked due to queries, it is very likely to be correct.

We would strongly suggest reading the article published by GA on their website - https://www.golf.org.au/whs/

There are two areas that cover Caps, as there is now a Soft Cap and a Hard Cap.
  • PART A: Things that stay the same.
Item 7. Hard Cap of 5 Strokes - Players can go out no more than 5 Strokes from their Cap
  • PART C: Things that are new.
Item 16. Soft Cap of 3 strokes (to operate in conjunction with the Hard Cap - see Part A) - A Cap of 50% the change is applied to Scores within this range.

The Cap is recalculated the first score submitted one year and a day after the Cap Round date.
Until a Score is submitted after this date your Cap will not be adjusted.

Golf Link cannot alter a Cap, this can however be undertaken by the players Home Club, they can make an Official Handicap adjustment.

This can be applied entirely at the discretion of the Home Club and may be used for players coming back after a major injury or a player returning after a long time away from Golf and not able to play to their previous GA Hcp.
